White-Chocolate Cherry Shortbread [Jan. 11th, 2011|08:57 pm]
[Tags|, , , ]

I served refreshments after church on Sunday, which was a great way to try out some new recipes I'd been itching to try. This is a test run for white-chocolate cherry shortbread cookies, which I'm hoping to tweak to make my Valentine's Day dessert this year. These cookies look very pretty and have a mild, buttery taste. You don't get a lot of cherry flavor, so next time I think I will add more almond extract. Dipping them in white chocolate definitely made them better. As my brother said, it complements the dryness of the shortbread.

i loved that these turned out so pretty! >u<

New Year's Day: Boston Cream Pie [Jan. 10th, 2011|11:57 pm]
[Tags|, , , ]

Felt very American when we went to my Aunt's house for lunch on New Year's Day. We've been having a warm winter, so it was good grilling weather and we made hamburgers. Of course as good southerners we also had our black eyed peas! Another tradition down here is to eat 12 grapes on New Year's Day. I was asked to bring a dessert, and I thought a Boston Cream Pie would be yummy but simple enough to appeal to a wide variety of tastes.

After all my holiday baking, I was tempted to just use a yellow cake mix for this recipe, but I'm very glad I made the cake from scratch. The entire thing was yummy, but I feel like the filling was barely enough for the cake.

This is only a singer layer cake, split in half with pudding filling. It's not a huge cake, but we had 10 people and everyone got a satisfying slice for dessert!

Obviously I am just trying to get all these posted because otherwise I will just fall horribly behind again 8'D

New Year's Eve Party: Lasagna & Appetizers [Jan. 10th, 2011|10:53 pm]

[Current Mood |relaxedrelaxed]

I got this neat lasagna pan for Christmas! You can make 3 different types in one pan! *u*

One of my presents from my aunt was a bag of fresh lemons from her tree. I made a delicious lemon curd to dip the fruit in and it was amazing!

I just had a few friends over for New Year's Eve. I wanted a chance to try out my new lasagna pan that I received for Christmas! I made three different types for three different tastes, and the pan worked beautifully! This is my first time making lasagna, so it turned out ok, but I learned some things to make it even better next time!

The lasagna on the left is vegetarian, with a jarred portobello & cheese sauce I had in the pantry. Then I made the tomato sauce in the lasagna recipe that I looked up (that happened to contain BACON! *u* ). The one on the right has italian sausage added, but my brother doesn't like it, so the middle one has the bacon tomato sauce but no sausage. Then we played Battle of the Sexes, set off fireworks, and Apples to Apples and almost forgot that it was getting close to midnight! XD I hope everyone had fun!

I thought the lasagna was acceptable, it just came out a bit dry, so next time I know to cover it longer and/or add more sauce. 8)

Happy New Year! I hope 2011 is a wonderful year for everyone!

International Christmas: Pavlova [Jan. 10th, 2011|08:59 pm]
[Tags|, , , , , , , ]

My family decided to do an international theme for our Christmas dinner this year. Representing Australia & New Zealand is a pavlova - a meringue disk topped with whipped cream and fresh fruit. It was voted by many as the best dessert we had this year! I'll let the Aussies & Kiwis fight over which country's pavlova is the "real" pavlova. In the meantime, mine turned out delicious! >w<

I love this dessert because it is light but rich and flavorful. It's also very versatile - you can flavor the meringue and choose any variety of toppings. I went with berries and cherries because Down Under, Christmas comes in the summer!

Meringue can be a bit tricky to make, but if you follow a few basic tips, it should turn out just fine! Like most things, it just takes practice.

Next year's theme is "Christmas in July...in December." We're going to have a cook out! XD

Recently have gotten into bread making again. I had some extra onions and a hankering for freshly baked bread, so I decided to give this recipe a try. Ended up eating half the loaf for dinner. 8'D

Also, my Mom mentioned I hadn't updated my food blog in forever, so I'll make an effort to post all my backlog from the past months. 8'DDD

Oh my goodness. This dip. I made it for my friend's bridal shower the first time....and had to go out and buy more ingredients because I ate most of the first batch >.>

I've ended up putting it on just about anything - tortilla chips, pita chips, veggies (both raw and cooked), a topping sauce for omelettes, etc. It's soooooo yummy and versatile *w* And with a food processor it's also super easty to make!

can there ever be too much cilantro? i am skeptical :'D

Ice Cream Sundae Bridal Shower [Mar. 7th, 2010|09:29 pm]

My friend from high school is getting married THIS coming weekend (OMG ALREADY ;A; ), so as a bridesmaid I hosted a bridal shower for her a few weeks ago! Unfortunately, in all my haste in trying to put the party together, I totally forgot to take pictures of most of the food and stuff ;A; SOBB My mom took a few shots for me, but we has already started eating ;_;

My friend loves ice cream, so I decided to a "build your own ice cream sundae" party. Bought several flavors of my favorite Bluebell ice cream, chocolate syrup, caramel, and strawberry syrups, plus toppings like chocolate chips, toffee bits, gummy bears, sprinkles, and M&Ms. I also made an almond cookie cake, red velvet cake balls, and a cilantro dip that was to DIE for. *A*

I also lucked out that one of their wedding colors is red, with a heart theme on their invitations, and the bridal shower was /right/ after Valentine's Day, so I got TONS of stuff on sale for the shower. \o/
Picture of the rest of the foodCollapse )

I've been wanting to make cake balls for a long time, so the shower provided a perfect chance to finally make them! They are really easy to make and are very versatile, because you can use any combination of cake flavor and frosting flavor that you like. The only thing intensive about them is the time it takes to roll the cake into balls and dip them in the chocolate coating.

The recipeCollapse )

next up, to help /cook/ the food for the wedding :'D ahahah~ omg

Spoon Bread! [Mar. 3rd, 2010|01:59 am]

MMMMMMM.....spoon bread. Good, southern, comfort food. >w< Spoon bread is basically a softer cornbread that....you scoop out and eat with a spoon, hence the name. Conversation earlier today with kanebullar got me craving some spoon bread. I've never actually made it before but IT'S SO GOOD, that today seemed like a good day to learn how to make it! :'D

I'm not really sure what you call this dish - Three Sisters skillet? It has zucchini squash, corn, and beans, which all together not only make a complete protein but also taste DELICIOUS >w< This is really good with fried fish too. Usually I cook potatoes in it too for a one-pot dish, but I forgot to buy potatoes at the store, so today's meal is sans-spuds :'3

Recipes, etc....Collapse )

Of course, as a good southern girl, I drank a large glass of sweet iced tea with this meal.... :'D Also Happy Birthday Texas! 8D ♥

Draw a circle~! [Aug. 25th, 2009|10:52 pm]

Made my brother's favorite red velvet cupcakes tonight, since he's leaving for school tomorrow (;A;). Recipe can be found here: http://mixedupgreens.livejournal.com/12296.html

Not my best work on the faces, but it was late at night and I was tired. I'm excited that the black food coloring worked out well and actually made the frosting very black! They are all characters from my favorite series and current obsession Axis Powers Hetalia, which is a web comic/anime where all the characters are anthropomorphic representations of the countries. It is very silly and cute, and is about history, in a lulzy way. Plus, it's random. Therefore it combines all of my loves. :D

From the top, going clockwise, we have England, France, Russia, China, Germany, Japan, Italy, and AMERICA~! ♥ Gah, so cute XD

in one week I will be in London!! O_O
